One of Your Daughters (more alike than different)

Dear Lord, I met one of Your daughters today
I cannot remember her name
she was standing on the corner
giving her body away

drying in the sun, her heart was in the dark
she's got looks of condemnation and distant aspirations
we're both still here
we've had our mama's prayers
truth is we're more alike than different

she holds a hope that darkness wouldn't last
that her daughters might find a better way
and that they would hold tightly to their faith
would the good lord please see to keep them safe?

there's something unnatural
what great color is missing from this picture?
why has she traded roses for violence
and a diamond for clients?

behind that bruise she has beneath her brow
she's certain that she's smart
and in her sweet smile, I caught a shimmer of her heart
she smiled sweetly, and I saw her more clearly

would you give us all eyes to see
our reflections more clearly
lord knows I've done my time
living inside these lies
I've cried into mirrors
which I couldn't recognize

I know what He's done for me
He gave me the eyes to see
a joy I wasn't sure was true
I thought that I was doomed
but He loved me
truth is we're more alike than different
and I know He would do it again
